3% of Front Yards Can Transform a City

The concept is elegant: if at least 3% of residential front yards become native micro-sanctuaries, the aggregate ecological impact reaches a tipping point—creating habitat corridors, reducing flooding, and demonstrating that collective small actions produce systemic change.

Why 3% is the Tipping Point

The Mathematics of Scale

In a 1-million-person city, 3% of residential front yards equals 30,000 micro-sanctuaries. Assuming each is 500 sq ft, that's 15 million square feet of restored habitat—an area larger than Central Park.

At that scale, individual actions create systemic change:

  • Habitat corridors form across neighborhoods, enabling species movement
  • Urban flooding measurably decreases through stormwater absorption
  • Native pollinators recover as food sources and shelter become contiguous
  • A new economic model becomes visible and viable to the mainstream
  • Political will for systemic change crystallizes

The 3-step process to receiving a donated garden

Step 1

Eligibility & Screening

Tell us about your property and situation. If you're a renter, we verify landlord consent. We evaluate property conditions and ecological potential.

Step 2

Assessment & Design

Our team visits your property, understands your vision, and creates a custom ecological design. We review the plan together.

Step 3

Installation & Matching

We match you with a sponsor, handle installation, and set you on the path of relational stewardship. Your garden journey begins.

Step 4

Verification & Support

Your garden enters our Verification & Validation system. We provide ongoing stewardship support and celebrate your achievements.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. We prioritize based on ecological potential and demonstrated commitment to stewardship.

What Happens After Installation

Your garden enters the network

Months 1-3

Establishment

Weekly watering, observation of initial growth, species notes. Foundation phase with high attention.

Months 4-6

Expansion

First pollinators arrive. Growth accelerates. You begin "The Steward's Walk"—observational practice.

Months 7-12

Maturity

Ecosystem self-organizes. Seasonal transitions emerge. Garden becomes increasingly independent.

Year 2+

Legacy

Your garden is a mature sanctuary. Low-maintenance, high-impact, and part of the neighborhood's living network.
